Not in the mood for a Big Mac? The Global Kitchen offers a combination of Latin and West African menu; guaranteed to titillate you with exotic alternatives for your dining. I feel bad for friends and the locals that live here. I am sure they would literally kill me if they found out I told people about this spot. It is a double edged sword, i am sure they want the spot to themselves and don't want it packed all the time, but then i am sure they realize, it won't be open for much long if there isn't a lot of foot traffic for this new business. Very charming, undiluted little place with great neighborhood restaurants and neat shops nearby. it's not inconvenient to get to at all, just off of 94 West and Shingle Creek Pkwy. Great India & 50's Grill are two of my other favorite spots close by. It is a half-baked menu but a very interesting one to try; my personal favorite from the African menu is the divinely flavorsome and heavenly scrumptious 'Couscous' (steamed semolina, with vegetables and your choice of meat) and from the Latin menu, the 'Caldo De Camaron' (Shrimp soup) has a very unusual taste but superb nevertheless. 'THE DON'T MESS WITH JOSE BURRITO THE MIDWEST'S BIGGEST BURRITO' is literally the biggest burrito you have ever laid eyes on. Very clean, calm relaxing atmosphere with great service; it is only a matter of time before yelpers realize this sheltered, mouth-watery new spot.

Food was good. Food was also over priced and very slow service for only three people being there.

We got the Jose's biggest burrito in the Midwest. Its big and my partner liked it alot, itcame with a smoky smooth salsa. On the other hand, I got the west african buffet. I just didn't like most of it, which included about four dishes made with boiled, super dark (almost black) spiced spinach (I am usually a huge fan of Indian Saags of all varieties!). The other dishes were tomato based with meat. The overwhelming flavor of all the dishes was smoky, kinda greasy palm nut oil. I don't mind grease but the dishes all had the same smoky spice flavor. Many of the buffet items were the spinach sauce with unidentifiable pieces of meat (and gristle), which I don't like. The Jollof rice was by far and away the best dish but even so, as much as i wanted to love the food, I really did not. Then there was some soup, which tasted like a better cream of chicken and some pieces of chicken in a crock pot, sort of like mole but without the zing. Maybe I am not a fan of this kind of cuisine, which is odd. Maybe its the schizophrenia of having a mexican-west african cuisine. Maybe its just my stupid white girl taste buds. The whole place was really clean, the music was great, people and service excellent. I just did not like the food. I think it was the palm oil but since I cannot identify what the smoky, earth spice is, I have no idea.

I should have asked why the half and half West African and Mexican. But no matter, we were there for the former, and it was great. There's a buffet if you're not sure and want to sample, but ask the server about the menu items because some of the best is there, the kind of things that are best fresh from the kitchen. Unique favors, spices and ingredients. Take a star off for small beer and wine selection although I suspect that's a cultural issue.

And one of those great moments of travel when you find someplace wonderful. Global Kitchen is just is a wonderfully unexpected pleasure in a shopping mall, someplace you've never been before, kind of on the outskirts of town. I discovered the global kitchen through YELP. It's a family owned restaurant that mixes Mexican and genuine African. Many of the patrons are Africans who greet you warmly when you show an interest in their comfort food. I ate FUFU, a mildly spicy meaty or fishy stew with a kind of peanuty lemony exotic mixture of spices poured over Fufu, a dumpling/bread/pasta made of tapioca flour, I believe (cassava root). Mine was a mixture of crab and shrimp and fish and was just absolutely delicious, a huge portion, and nicely priced. they have a buffet and great mexican for the less adventurous. Say hello to Wayne the manager and tell him Dan from Brazil sent you.
